Com uma impressionante fachada barroca de coral e pedra branca - com desenhos cerâmicos - o Convento da Ordem Dominicana ergue-se na Calle Padre Billini. Construído no século XVI por volta da mesma época que a primeira catedral da cidade, foi o lar de 15 frades enviados de Espanha para cá, que acabaram por estabelecer a primeira universidade adjacente nas Américas. Um deles, Fray Antón de Montesinos, tornou-se o primeiro defensor dos direitos humanos nas Américas, pronunciando-se contra os abusos sofridos pelos índios Taino. O interior do convento revela um design romano e gótico deslumbrante, com tectos abobadados, capelas ornamentadas, um altar de mogno com aparas de folhas douradas, e uma estátua de Santo Domingo de Guzmán, fundador da ordem.
