Description

The Laguna Salada de Torrevieja is one of the largest and saltiest lakes in Europe.Pink, a strong and intense pink: to the south of the province of Alicante, in Spain, a unique natural phenomenon unfolds before the eyes of visitors. It is the incredible pink lagoon of Torrevieja, 1,400 hectares within the Natural Park of Lagunas de la Mata e Torrevieja. This beautiful nature reserve on the Costa Blanca includes two of the largest saltwater lakes in Europe, both of which are connected to the sea by canals. In addition to the Torrevieja lagoon, the blue-green La Mata lagoon is also worth a visit. Incredibly pink, sometimes tending to fuchsia and breathtaking, the waters of Torrevieja are actually the result of a unique natural phenomenon produced by a bacterium capable of releasing a pink pigment in water with a high salt concentration: in the case of the pink lagoon, 350 grams per liter of water, very close to what happens in the Dead Sea. More precisely, the pink color is given by the pigments of Halobacterium bacteria, typical of extreme saline environments, but also by an alga, the so-called Dunaliella Salina, responsible for the bright red color of the lake.
