At six in the morning, when the tropical mist slowly retreats from the rainforests of Costa Rica, the profile of the Arenal Volcano emerges with an almost unreal clarity. The almost perfect cone — reaching an altitude of 1,670 meters — stands out against a sky that shifts from pearl gray to intense orange in just a few minutes. It is not a photographic effect: it is simply dawn in La Fortuna, the village at the foot of the volcano that serves as the natural starting point for those who want to observe this extraordinary geological phenomenon.
The Arenal is one of the most recognizable volcanoes in Central America precisely because of its regular, almost geometric conical shape, reminiscent of textbook drawings of volcanology. Having been in almost continuous eruption from 1968 to 2010, it is now in a phase of relative quiet, but its physical presence completely dominates the landscape. The most important advice for those who want to see the volcano is to arrive early in the morning, preferably by seven. Clouds tend to accumulate during the central hours of the day, often completely covering the cone in the afternoon. The dry season, which generally runs from December to April, offers the best chances of visibility, but even in the wet months, windows of clear sky in the morning are frequent.
La Fortuna can be reached in about three hours by car from San José, the capital. The town has numerous accommodations for all price ranges. For the park trails, it is advisable to wear sturdy closed shoes, as the lava surfaces are uneven and sharp. Bringing enough water is essential: the humid climate makes you sweat more than you realize during the hike.
