At six in the morning, when the slanting sun paints the dunes in an almost unreal orange, the only perceivable sound is the gentle sliding of sand beneath the feet. The Ash Sharqiyah Sands, also known as Wahiba Sands, stretch for about 180 kilometers in the heart of the eastern region of Oman, forming one of the most compact and visually coherent desert landscapes in the Arabian Peninsula. This is not a flat and monotonous desert: each dune is a different sculpture, shaped by the seasonal winds that change direction between summer and winter.
The most accessible base camp for visitors is Al Mintrib, a small village on the eastern edge of the desert, reachable in about two and a half hours by car from Muscat by taking the main road to Nizwa and then turning east. From here, most of the off-road tours and transfers to the Bedouin camps that dot the interior of the dunes depart. Sleeping under the stars: the Bedouin camps
The Bedouin camps within the dunes offer an experience that ranges from rustic to elaborate. Some, like the Thousand Nights Camp located directly on the dunes near Al Mintrib, feature tents furnished with traditional carpets, private bathrooms, and dinners featuring Omani dishes such as shuwa, marinated meat slowly cooked in holes in the ground. Prices per night typically range between 70 and 150 euros per person, with dinner often included.
The night in the desert is a revelation for those coming from the cities. The almost total absence of light pollution makes the Milky Way visible to the naked eye with a clarity that surprises even those who think they know the night sky. The temperature drops significantly after sunset, even in spring, so it is essential to bring a warm layer. The nighttime silence is absolute, interrupted only by the wind and, occasionally, the distant call of some animal.
Activities in the Desert: Sandboarding and Off-Roading
Sandboarding is the most popular activity among young visitors: you slide down the steep faces of the dunes on boards similar to snowboards, reaching surprising speeds on the compact sand of the crests. It does not require any particular technical experience, but it is advisable to wear sunglasses or protective goggles to prevent sand from getting into your eyes during the descent.
4x4 off-road tours through the dunes are almost mandatory to reach the more remote areas of the desert, which are inaccessible on foot in a reasonable time. Local drivers know the routes and practice dune bashing, the driving technique on sand that involves partially deflating the tires to increase the contact surface. It is a spectacle in itself, as well as a means of transportation.
Practical tips for visiting the Ash Sharqiyah Sands
The best time to visit the desert is between October and March, when daytime temperatures remain between 20 and 30 degrees. In summer, the thermometer can exceed 45 degrees, making any outdoor activity potentially dangerous during the central hours of the day. Sunrise and sunset are the most photogenic and thermally bearable moments in any season.
Those arriving by their own car must absolutely not venture into the dunes without a 4x4 vehicle and without partially deflating the tires: two-wheel drive vehicles get stuck quickly and recovery can be complicated and expensive. Camps often organize transfers from Al Mintrib with their own vehicles, which eliminates the problem. Always bring plenty of water, high-factor sunscreen, and, if staying overnight, warm clothing for the night.
