Top of the World
The majestic Romanesque Basilica of Santa Giulia in Bonate Sotto is today located in the cemetery area at the end of the village, surrounded by peace and nature. Built in the ancient Borgo Lesina, it was situated in a point of strategic importance, at the confluence of Brembo and Lesina where the town centre of which it was the heart stood. Around 1200 the Castrum Lisina, dating back to Neolithic times, was razed to the ground as a political punishment, the inhabitants decided to abandon it and build a new settlement towards the village where today is the centre of Bonate. The Basilica passed from a central place to an increasingly marginal and abandoned place, until it became a cemetery area in the 19th century. The construction with a slightly trapezoidal plan dates back to the 11th century, originally with a three-aisled structure with semicircular apses and five bays. Of the original structure remain part of the perimeter wall, the three apses and the first covered span. The roof and part of the outer wall have been lost.
