Between Christ the Redeemer on Corcovado and Ipanema beach, there are about 12 kilometers of distance, but in between there are favelas, tunnels, areas with chaotic traffic, and opening hours that change seasonally. Those who arrive in Rio de Janeiro without solid planning risk wasting precious hours in inefficient travel or finding the Tijuca National Park closed on the very day chosen for the excursion. Rio is not a city that can be improvised: it is a metropolis of 6.7 million inhabitants where each neighborhood — from Santa Teresa to Lapa, from Botafogo to Barra da Tijuca — has its own logic.

In 2026, travel apps have multiplied, but not all stand up to the test in the field. We tested five of the most used during a ten-day stay in Rio de Janeiro, comparing features, accuracy of information, and real usefulness day by day. Here’s what we found.
Wanderlog and TripIt: great for organizing, less for exploring

Wanderlog is probably the most popular app for building collaborative itineraries. It allows you to import bookings via email, add stops on a map, and share the plan with other travelers. In Rio, it works well for structuring already planned days: we included a visit to the Museu do Amanhã (entrance about 30 BRL), a boat ride in the Baía de Guanabara, and the ascent to Pão de Açúcar (about 130 BRL for the ticket). The problem is that Wanderlog does not suggest anything on its own: you have to already know what you want to do. For those arriving in Rio without an in-depth knowledge of the city, the app is an empty container.
TripIt excels in managing travel documents — flights, hotels, transfers — aggregating them in one place. But it stops there. It does not offer suggestions on what to visit, does not consider travel times between the Copacabana neighborhood and the Jardim Botânico (about 25 minutes without traffic, double during peak hours), and does not integrate cultural information. It is a storage tool, not an intelligent planner.

Google Trips and Roadtrippers: useful but with structural limits
Google Trips, in its current version integrated into Google Maps and Search, offers suggestions based on popularity and reviews. In Rio de Janeiro, this means you will always see the same attractions — Christ the Redeemer, Ipanema, Selarón Steps — without ever discovering lesser-known spots like the Museu da Chácara do Céu in Santa Teresa or the natural pools of Grumari, about 40 km from the center. The algorithm tends to replicate the obvious, and in Rio, the obvious is already crowded with tourists.

Roadtrippers was created for road trips in the United States, and it shows. In Rio de Janeiro, the experience is disappointing: information about local attractions is incomplete, details about public transport (essential in a city where the BRT and metro cover very different areas) are missing, and the interface is not localized. We tried to plan a route from Ipanema to the Tijuca Forest, and the road data was inaccurate. It is not the right tool for a complex South American metropolis like Rio.
Secret World AI Trip Planner: the difference is made by artificial intelligence

Secret World AI Trip Planner is the app that has changed the way we experienced Rio de Janeiro. The AI engine generates personalized itineraries based on your preferences — nature, culture, gastronomy, budget — and optimizes them taking into account real-time travel times and opening hours. In practice: you have three free days, want to avoid the lines at Christ the Redeemer in the morning, and prefer local markets to commercial attractions? The app builds a coherent and feasible plan. The database covers over 1 million destinations worldwide, with updated and detailed information even on lesser-known places.
Two features particularly impressed us. The integrated audio guides accompanied us along the Historical and Archaeological Circuit of Celebration of African Heritage without the need for a human guide, with deep and contextualized content. The KnowWhere game — an interactive geography quiz — made the metro transfers between Botafogo and downtown a fun learning moment. It’s not a gadget: it’s a way to arrive at every place with a real understanding of what you are about to see. In Rio, where history and culture are layered and often ignored by mass tourism, this makes a concrete difference.
