About 20 kilometers from Bonito, in the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso do Sul, a staircase descends into the belly of the earth for over 100 steps. At the end of the descent, in almost total silence, something hard to believe appears: an underground lake of such an intense and transparent blue that it seems unreal, as if someone had poured liquid sapphire into a stone cavity. This is the Natural Monument Gruta do Lago Azul, one of the most extraordinary caves in Brazil.
The color that gives the place its name is not an artificial effect nor an optical illusion: it is the result of sunlight filtering through the opening of the cave and refracting in the crystal-clear water, rich in calcium carbonate. The cave has been scientifically explored since the 1980s, and researchers have documented that the lake reaches depths greater than 80 meters. At the bottom, during some underwater expeditions, fossils of prehistoric animals have been found, including remains of mastodons and other Pleistocene megafauna.
The descent into the cave: what to expect
The entrance to the cave opens up to a landscape of typical Cerrado forest in Brazil. After the first steps inside, the temperature drops sharply compared to the outside heat, and the humidity increases noticeably. The descent along the staircase is steep and requires attention: the surfaces are wet and the path is not suitable for those with significant mobility difficulties. Once you arrive at the platform overlooking the lake, the visual impact is immediate. The water is a color that varies from turquoise to deep blue depending on the angle of the light. The most spectacular time to observe the lake is during the months of January and February, when the sun is positioned in such a way that it directly penetrates the opening of the cave and illuminates the water from above. During this period, between approximately 10 AM and 1 PM, the lake lights up with an electric blue that transforms the cavity into something akin to a natural cathedral. In the other months of the year, the light is more diffuse and less direct, but the place remains visually powerful nonetheless.
The park opens in the morning and visits are organized in groups with scheduled times, so it is essential to book in advance, especially during the Brazilian tourist season between December and March. The number of daily visitors is limited to protect the cave's ecosystem.
How to get there and practical information
Bonito can be reached by plane through the airport of Campo Grande, the capital of Mato Grosso do Sul, followed by about three hours of transfer by bus or rental car. From Bonito, the cave can be reached in about 20-25 minutes by car. There is no direct public transport service, so the most common solution is to rent a vehicle or rely on local agencies that organize daily tours.
Entrance to the cave is paid and the ticket necessarily includes a local guide: visiting the cave independently is not allowed. The indicative cost is around 100-150 Brazilian reais per person, but it is advisable to check the updated rates directly with the agencies in Bonito or on the official website of the municipality. Bringing shoes with non-slip soles is strongly recommended, as well as light clothing but with an extra layer to compensate for the cold inside the cavity.

The Gruta do Lago Azul is not an isolated attraction: it is located in a region known for the extraordinary quality of its underground waters and rivers. Mato Grosso do Sul hosts one of the most important aquifer systems in South America, and Bonito has become over the years a structured ecotourism destination, with precise regulations that seek to balance tourist access with environmental conservation.
