La terrasse faisait à l'origine partie des remparts construits pour protéger la ville. Entre 1739 et 1748, le comte Henrich von Brühl, un puissant ministre du roi Auguste le Fort, a transformé les remparts en un jardin en terrasses pour son palais. Goethe lui a donné le nom de "Balcon de l'Europe".
En 1814, après la construction d'un escalier monumental reliant la Schlossplatz à la terrasse, les jardins ont été ouverts au public. L'escalier est flanqué de quatre sculptures en bronze, chacune symbolisant une saison.
En montant l'escalier, vous pouvez voir un certain nombre de beaux bâtiments sur votre droite.
