About Caldeirão Verde Trail: Forest and Waterfall in Santana

Caldeirão Verde Trail: Forest and Waterfall in Santana - Levada do Caldeirão Verde | Secret World Trip Planner

A water channel barely half a meter wide, carved into the volcanic rock overlooking the deep green of the forest — this is the first image that greets those who walk the Levada do Caldeirão Verde, in the municipality of Santana, in the north of the island of Madeira, Portugal. This is not just any path: you literally walk on the edge of a cliff, with the forest rising vertically above your head and plunging below your feet, while the water flows silently beside your boots.

The levada — the Portuguese term for these irrigation channels built since the 15th century to bring water from the humid northern areas to the plantations in the south — is one of the most famous routes in Madeira, and after about 6 kilometers of walking leads to one of the most spectacular natural destinations in the archipelago: the Caldeirão Verde waterfall, which cascades from a height of about 100 meters into an amphitheater of ancient rock and vegetation.

The Laurisilva: a forest that comes from the Tertiary

Walking along this levada means crossing the Laurisilva, the subtropical laurel forest that covers about 20% of Madeira and has been classified as UNESCO World Heritage since 1999. This forest is a living relic from the Tertiary, an ecosystem that existed in much of southern Europe and North Africa millions of years ago, then swept away by glaciations and survived only in the islands of Macaronesia — Madeira, Azores, Canary Islands, and Cape Verde.

Along the path, the dominant species can be recognized: the til (Ocotea foetens), the laurel (Laurus novocanariensis), the vinhático (Persea indica), and the barbusano (Apollonias barbujana). The trunks are covered with mosses and ferns, and the humidity is so dense that the air has a distinct smell of earth and plant resin. Those who walk slowly and quietly may spot the trocaz pigeon, the Madeira pigeon (Columba trocaz), an endemic species that feeds on the fruits of the Laurisilva and is rarely found elsewhere.

The four tunnels: total darkness and living rock

The most memorable part of the trail consists of the four tunnels carved into the basalt rock that the path crosses before reaching the waterfall. The longest exceeds 150 meters and requires a flashlight — or the phone's flashlight — because inside there is complete darkness. The walls ooze water, the ceiling is low in some places, and the floor is slippery. It is not a technical difficulty, but a concrete physical experience: you exit the tunnel with your eyes taking a few seconds to readjust to the green light of the forest.

These tunnels were not built for tourists, but to allow water to flow around the rocky outcrops that interrupted the natural course of the channel. They are functional infrastructures, still active today, and the sound of water flowing in the levada accompanies every step even in the deepest darkness.

The waterfall and the final amphitheater

At the end of the path, a rocky basin suddenly opens up — the Caldeirão Verde, literally the "green cauldron" — where the waterfall drops vertically for about 100 meters into a pool surrounded by walls covered with giant ferns and moss. The vegetation is so dense and the sky so narrow that the light arrives filtered, and the environment has an almost underwater quality. The temperature drops several degrees compared to the open trail, and the humidity is total.

It is not possible to swim in the pool, but one can sit on the rocks and observe how the water, pulverized by the impact, creates a permanent mist that nourishes the vegetation all around. It is a closed, self-sufficient ecosystem that exists thanks to the waterfall itself.

Practical information for visiting the levada

The classic starting point is the Parque das Queimadas, reachable by car from Santana following the road signs. Parking is free. The round trip is about 12 kilometers total and takes on average 4-5 hours, with a moderate elevation gain. No guide is necessary, but it is mandatory to bring a flashlight for the tunnels and to wear shoes with non-slip soles, as the trail is wet in every season.

The best time to walk is in the early morning, when the light filters better through the vegetation and the likelihood of encountering wildlife is higher. In the winter months, the trail may be partially closed due to landslides: it is advisable to check the status of the trail on the Parque Natural da Madeira website before departing. Access to the trail is free.
