Instrumentos quirúrgicos de hierro y bronce como sondas, fórceps ginecológicos, catéteres y bisturíes dan nombre a la casa, una de las más antiguas de Pompeya (siglo III a.C.), con bloques cuadrados de piedra caliza en la fachada y paredes internas construidas en "opus africanum". Con su disposición regular, la casa es el resultado de al menos dos renovaciones posteriores, además de un piso superior en la parte rústica: estudios recientes creen que el impluvio de toba es el original. La decoración que se conserva es especialmente admirable en una sala con ventana que da al jardín, con pinturas de "primer estilo" en el exterior (siglo II a.C.) y de "cuarto estilo" en el interior (después del 50 d.C.).
