La fachada del opus quadratum muestra la antigüedad de esta casa: el terremoto del 62 d.C. obligó a realizar reformas que aún estaban en curso en el momento de la erupción. Las estancias están decoradas con un estilo muy agradable, con pinturas figurativas de tema mitológico y naturalezas muertas. El larario "de Aquiles" debe su nombre a las figuras, en relieve y pintadas sobre fondo azul, que muestran los episodios finales de la guerra de Troya: el duelo entre Aquiles y Héctor, la muerte del troyano, el regreso de su cadáver en un carro a su anciano padre Príamo, escoltado por Hermes.
