A catedral dedicada a Santa María Assunta foi construído en torno a 1120 en un pre-existentes igrexa dedicada a Santa María destruída por un violento terremoto. A fachada en estilo Románico Pisano remonta ao século xvi, cando a igrexa foi ampliada e adornada probablemente tamén por Nicola Pisano que traballou nas próximas Batistério.
O interior ten unha cruz latina con tres naves divididas por 22 de granito columnas e paredes pintadas en negro e branco bandas. Na esquerda nave non é o Pergamon, reconstruída usando elementos procedentes de THEII
A Catedral ten unha Renacentista aparencia debido ás continuas reformas que tiveron lugar ao longo dos séculos, tales como o grandioso teito de caixotões con decoración xeométrica elementos.
No centro da nave son os bustos dos Santos da Volterra igrexa: Sant'ugo, San Giusto, San Lino Papa, San Clemente e os Santos Actinia e Greciniana.
