Château Cos d'Estournel

"Château Cos d'Estournel, estate which found its origins in 1811 with the acquisition by Louis-Gaspard d'Estournel, takes its name, ""Cos"" and that is ""gravel hill"", from the undulating soils of northern Médoc. In 1855 it was included in the official classification of Bordeaux wines as 2éme Grand Cru Classé, one of the fifteen Deuxièmes Crus, and from there began its history which brings it up to nowadays. Considered since the beginning as one of the reference château of Saint-Estèphe and of the Left Bank, it has never stopped innovating and refining its style. The vineyard is 70 hectares out of a total of one hundred owned for a total production of 32,000 cases. Today the new winery, a marvel in terms of architecture and design, is one of the references of the area in terms of innovation aimed to simplification through the wise and measured use of new technologies. The splendid Château, historical headquarter of Cos d'Estournel, is adjacent to the castle and lands of Château Lafite-Rothschild as it is right on the border between Saint-Estéphe and Pauillac. Cos d'Estournel changed hands many times from 1852, just before the classification, when it was in the hands of English banker Charles Cecil Martyns. In 1869 the Spanish Errazu family took over and remained there for about twenty years, when it was acquired by the Bordeaux Hostein family. Through the marriage of Marie-Thérèse Hostein with Louis-Victor Charmolue, owner of Château Montrose, the French control was consolidated and continued with the Ginestet family in 1917 and then entering Domaines Prats. The current owner is Michel Reybier, who also owns Chateau Montelena in Napa Valley. This winery, rich in history, will continue to amaze us with its unmistakable and ever-evolving style as well as its long-lived and unforgettable wines Since 1994, it has been producing a second wine called Les Pagodes de Cos in which the grapes from the younger vines of Château Cos d'Estournel flow together.
