Villerouge-Termenès, located in France, is associated with the history of the Cathars and the events of the medieval crusade known as the Albigensian Crusade. Catholic forces eventually gained the upper hand and the Cathar movement was severely weakened. The last Cathar stronghold, Montségur, fell in 1244, leading to the near-extinction of the Cathars and the end of the crusade.Today, Cathar castles in the region, including those near Villerouge-Termenès, represent valuable reminders of this tumultuous period in history. Visitors can explore these impressive ruins, which often offer splendid views of the surrounding landscapes. They provide insights into the religious, political and military conflicts that shaped the medieval era and the clash between different Christian factions.Although Villerouge-Termenès does not have a castle directly associated with the Cathars, its proximity to the Languedoc region allows visitors to explore Cathar castles and learn about the events of the Albigensian Crusade, which saw Christians engaged in a crusade against their Christian co-religionists.
