About Cofete Beach: The Wild Shore of Fuerteventura

Cofete Beach: The Wild Shore of Fuerteventura - Playa de Cofete | Secret World Trip Planner

Eighteen kilometers of golden sand stretch uninterrupted along the Atlantic coast of the Jandía peninsula, in the southernmost part of Fuerteventura. Playa de Cofete is not accessible by a regular car: to get there, one must travel along a rough dirt track that descends from the mountain pass, and this journey alone says a lot about the character of this place. There are no umbrellas, there are no bars, there are no showers. Only wind, ocean, and an expanse of sand that seems never-ending.

The beach is located in the municipality of Pájara, in the far southwest of the island, within the Jandía Natural Park, a protected area that covers much of the peninsula. This environmental protection status is one of the main reasons why Cofete has remained immune to the massive tourist development that has transformed other areas of Fuerteventura since the 1970s. Even in the height of summer, walking here often means having the entire beach almost to oneself.

How water and sand appear

The Atlantic at Cofete has nothing to do with the Mediterranean Sea. The ocean currents bring deep, cold waters to the surface, and the color of the water ranges from a deep intense green to a metallic blue-gray, very different from the turquoise of the more sheltered beaches of the island. On sunny days, where the seabed is shallower near the shore, flashes of emerald green can be seen, but the dominant color remains that of an open and powerful ocean.

The sand is light, medium-grained, with golden reflections and at times almost white in the drier areas. It is not the fine and compact sand of certain Caribbean beaches: here the wind constantly moves it, forming small spontaneous dunes at the edges of the beach, where the low and resilient vegetation of the natural park begins to take over. Walking barefoot is pleasant near the shore, where the water compacts the ground, but in the more inland areas the sand is loose and deep.

The unique atmosphere of Cofete

What strikes most about Cofete is not a single visual element, but the combination of scale and silence. The mountains of the Jandía sierra, which reach heights of over 800 meters with the peak of Pico de la Zarza at 807 meters, drop almost steeply towards the beach, creating a natural barrier that completely isolates this side from the inland. The Atlantic wind almost always blows with a certain strength, making the air briny and fresh even on the hottest days.

A few kilometers from the beach, also visible from the coast, is Villa Winter, a building from the 1940s attributed to the German engineer Gustav Winter. The building, isolated and austere in appearance, has fueled various legends over time related to its origin and its use during World War II, although the documented history remains partially incomplete. Today it is open to visitors and constitutes an interesting stop for those reaching the area.

The currents and water safety

It is important to be clear on this point: Playa de Cofete is a beach with very strong Atlantic currents and is not suitable for swimming for those who are not experienced swimmers. The waves can be powerful even on seemingly calm days, and rip currents are present along the entire coast. There is no lifeguard service. Many visitors come here to walk, take photos, and enjoy the scenery, not to swim.

Those who wish to swim safely can move to Playa de Barlovento, on the opposite side of the peninsula, where the waters are calmer and more sheltered. Cofete is instead the right place for those who want to feel the power of the open ocean without necessarily entering it.

Practical tips for the visit

To reach Cofete from Morro Jable, the nearest town, you need to travel along the FV-2 road until the pass and then descend onto the dirt track: the total distance is about 20 kilometers from the center of Morro Jable and requires a vehicle with adequate traction or at least good ground clearance. Some local agencies offer jeep or off-road excursions, which are the most convenient option for those who do not want to drive on dirt roads. There is also a seasonal shuttle bus service, but it is advisable to check its availability on-site.

The best time to visit Cofete is early in the morning when the slanting light illuminates the mountains behind the beach and the few visitors present are even fewer. Bringing enough water is essential: there are no refreshment points of any kind. A hat and a light jacket are also useful in summer because the wind can be persistent. Allow at least two or three hours to enjoy the walk along the shore and the surrounding landscape.
