This is the perfect place for those who have always dreamed of seeing the places where Cervantes imagined the exploits of the protagonists of his Don Quixote. I wanted to daydream too, and here is Consuegra!!! This town is located in the heart of the autonomous region of Castilla La-Mancha. It is about a couple of hours from Madrid and to reach this destination you need a car. The route from Madrid to the heart of Castilla-La Mancha is very interesting. An initial industrial area is suddenly followed by a lush countryside. It almost seems as if time begins to flow more slowly. After leaving the rhythms of the city, a very pleasant quietness takes over. Consuegra today appears as a quiet town, located in the heart of Castilla-La Mancha. The urban center is located in the plain. Spanish Square is the center from which you can start to admire the churches (dedicated respectively to Santa Maria, San Juan, Santa Cruz and San Raphael), the Franciscan Monastery, the Prior's Palace, the buildings in the old part of the city and, a little further away, the remains of the Roman dam. A hill a few hundred meters high houses on its ridge a castle and numerous windmills. They can already be seen in the distance, like a vision. A journey back in time in which to dive without further ado. A perfect signposting leads to the exact point where the road begins to move to reach the top of the hill of Calderico. In high season cars must be left in a large parking lot at the base of the hill. A couple of mills impose the stop. The first one is the seat of the tourist office. The second is a souvenir store. It is necessary to have a ticket to visit the castle and to enter in some mills. The Saffron festival in October is truly something spectacular.
