At six in the morning, the rocks of the Dadès canyon are almost purple. The slanting light of the rising sun has not yet reached the bottom of the valley, and the formations of red and pink sandstone that rise like twisted fingers on either side of the road seem to float in a bluish shadow. From one of the terraces of the Hotel Restaurant La Kasbah de Dades, in Boumalne Dades, this spectacle unfolds without filters: no fence, no ticket to pay, just the wind descending from the High Atlas mountains and the silence that precedes the awakening of the adobe villages along the river.

Boumalne Dades is located about 115 kilometers east of Ouarzazate, along the so-called Route des Kasbahs, the road that crosses the Drâa-Tafilalet region. The Dadès gorge is less known than the nearby Todra gorge, which is about 50 kilometers further east, yet the landscape here is more varied and, in many ways, more spectacular: not a single vertical corridor of rock, but an articulated system of valleys, eroded towers, and earthen kasbahs that follow one another for miles along the road that climbs towards the heart of the canyon.

The colors of the valley at different times of the day

The rusty red of the rocks continuously changes with the variation of light. Early in the morning, as mentioned, cool tones prevail: mauve, gray-blue, antique pink. When the sun rises over the eastern ridge of the valley, around eight or nine o'clock, the formations ignite with a burnt orange reminiscent of certain landscapes in the Utah desert. It is during this time window that the so-called "fingers of Dadès" — the columns of eroded rock located about 25 kilometers north of Boumalne, near the village of Aït Oudinar — show their most dramatic shape, with shadows accentuating their folds and mineral streaks.

Sunset is another matter. From the terrace of the hotel, facing the valley, the setting sun strikes the adobe kasbahs arranged on the slopes: the windows, often framed by white stucco or dark wood, reflect the light in such a way that they seem illuminated from within. The red of the rammed earth walls becomes almost luminescent for about twenty minutes, before the shadow quickly rises from the valley floor and extinguishes everything in a uniform gray. This effect, linked to the mineral composition of the local clay rich in iron oxides, is physically observable on site and does not require particular weather conditions.

The kasbah: architecture in rammed earth along the river

The kasbahs that dot the Dadès valley are traditional Berber constructions in rammed earth, a building technique that uses locally compacted clay in layers. Some of these structures date back centuries, although most of those visible today have been rebuilt or restored during the twentieth century. The corner towers with geometric relief decorations — a recurring motif in the region's architecture — are also visible from the hotel, particularly when looking north along the road that rises into the canyon.

The Hotel Restaurant La Kasbah de Dades fits into this architectural context with a structure that reflects local materials and forms. The building's location allows for an unobstructed view of the valley without necessarily having to rent a vehicle or undertake challenging excursions: the panorama is directly accessible from the structure, making it a convenient base for those who want to enjoy the landscape at a slower pace.

How to organize the visit: practical tips

The best time to be on the terrace is undoubtedly the hour after sunrise, typically between 6:30 and 8:30 depending on the season. In spring and autumn, the light is particularly favorable and the temperatures are mild; in summer, the heat can become oppressive by mid-morning, while in winter the nights are cold and the days are short, but the air is crystal clear and the mountains in the background may be covered in snow, adding an unusual color contrast.

To reach Boumalne Dades from Ouarzazate, take the N10 east: the journey takes about an hour and a half by car. There are also buses that connect the main cities in the region, but the times are less predictable. Those who intend to climb to the "fingers of Dadès", the most iconic rock formations of the canyon, must travel another 25 kilometers on a narrow paved road with sharp turns: a small sedan is sufficient, but be careful of tourist buses that descend at high speed. The ideal is to go early in the morning and return before noon, when the traffic of day-trippers increases significantly.

Why the Dadès is worth more than the Todra for the landscapes

The Todra Gorge attracts tens of thousands of visitors every year thanks to its established fame and the presence of vertical walls up to 300 meters high, frequented by climbers from all over the world. The Dadès offers something different: not a single highlight, but a continuous sequence of views that change at every bend in the road. The kasbahs integrated into the landscape, the cultivated fields along the river, the layered colors of the sedimentary rocks — all of this creates a panorama that reads narratively, like a landscape that tells its own geology and its own habitation history without the need for explanations.

The number of visitors remains significantly lower compared to the Todra, which means that at many moments of the day it is possible to have the valley almost to oneself. This is perhaps the most concrete and valuable detail that a traveler can take home: the feeling, increasingly rare, of being in an extraordinary place without the pressure of the crowd.
