La decoración de la escalera conocida como "dei Mutilati" pretende celebrar y recordar la figura de Alfonso Gatto, un ecléctico poeta, escritor, pintor y crítico de arte de Salerno.
La idea fue planteada por la Fundación Alfonso Gatto en colaboración con el Ayuntamiento de Salerno y ejecutada por la artista visual romana Alice Pasquini en octubre de 2014.
El mural sigue las rampas con escenas concretas en las que predominan los retratos de mujeres jóvenes y niños, seguidos desde arriba por la figura pensativa de Alfonso Gatto en el acto de encender un cigarrillo.
Las obras de arte no sólo cubren las paredes, sino también la escalera de acceso a la plaza Príncipe Amedeo: las contrahuellas de las rampas presentan versos de "Girotondo", "Un consiglio", "Chissà" y "Ogni uomo è stato un bambino", obras del poeta transcritas por el artista salernitano Greenpino.
