At about 600 meters above sea level, on the ridge that separates the Cantabrian coast from the inland mountains, the Mirador del Fitu offers something rare: a horizon that does not choose between sea and mountain, but shows both in the same glance. From this panoramic platform in the municipality of Caravia, in the Asturias region, you can see to the north the line of the Atlantic Ocean and to the south the jagged profiles of the Picos de Europa, the limestone massif that reaches 2,648 meters with the summit of Torre de Cerredo.
The observation point is accessible via the AS-260 road, a secondary route that climbs through oak and chestnut forests. There are no tickets to purchase, no gate, no significant tourist facilities: a stone platform, some informational panels about the local geology, and the wind blowing from the west almost all year round. It is precisely this absence of infrastructure that makes it still little frequented by visitors who do not live in the region.
The landscape at different times of the day
At dawn, when the light comes from the east at a low angle, the slopes of the Picos de Europa are colored with an orange that quickly glides towards the gray-green of the limestone rock. The low clouds, common in this area for much of the year, tend to linger between 400 and 500 meters, allowing the peaks to emerge like islands in a white sea. In these conditions, the viewpoint is often above the cloud cover, with visibility that can extend for dozens of kilometers.
In the afternoon, as the sun descends towards the west, the coast completely changes character: the beaches of Caravia and the rocky promontories of the Asturian coastline become more defined, and the rias, the small inlets that interrupt the coast, are clearly distinguishable. At sunset, on clear autumn days, the sea takes on metallic hues while the mountains become almost black in silhouette. It is probably the most visually intense moment of the day, although it requires staying until late evening.
What can be seen concretely from the viewpoint
Looking south, the view includes the Naranjo de Bulnes, locally called Picu Urriellu, a vertical limestone tower 2,519 meters high that is one of the symbols of Spanish mountaineering. It is not always distinguishable from a distance, but on days with excellent visibility, its characteristic shape — an almost vertical wall — stands out sharply from the other elevations. To the northeast, the roofs and bell towers of some medieval coastal villages can be glimpsed, including Ribadesella, which is located at the mouth of the río Sella.
At the foot of the viewpoint, looking down, one can see the intense green meadows that characterize the Asturian interior, dotted with hórreos, the traditional granaries on stilts made of stone or wood that are one of the most recognizable architectural structures in the region. Some date back to the 18th and 19th centuries and are still in use to store corn. Their presence in the landscape below adds a historical dimension to a panorama that would otherwise seem purely natural.
Practical information for the visit
The Mirador del Fitu has no opening hours because it is an open and free space. Access by car is possible all year round, but the AS-260 road can be slippery in winter when night frosts occur, especially between November and March. The available parking is limited to a few vehicles, so on summer weekends it is advisable to arrive before nine in the morning to find a spot without difficulty.
The typical visit time is 30-45 minutes, but those who want to wait for the sunset or photograph with variable light can easily stay for two or three hours. There are no bars or dining facilities on site: it is advisable to bring water and something to eat, especially if coming from the coast and planning to stay until evening. The nearest town with services is Colunga, about 10 kilometers west on the N-632. The best season for visibility is autumn, between September and November, when the rains clear the air and the clouds rise higher compared to summer.
How to include it in an itinerary in Asturias
The viewpoint is located less than an hour's drive from Oviedo and about 30 minutes from Ribadesella, making it easily combinable with a visit to the Tito Bustillo caves, located right in Ribadesella and known for the Paleolithic cave paintings dating back about 20,000 years. Those walking the Camino de Santiago on the coastal variant pass nearby, although the viewpoint is not on the main route.
For those traveling by car along the Cantabrian coast, Fitu works well as a half-hour detour from the N-632: you go up, you look, you come down. It does not require trekking equipment, does not require reservations, and does not require sharing the space with large organized groups. These three absences, in an era when famous viewpoints are often overcrowded, already represent a sufficient reason to come up here.
