About Floating Gardens of Inle Lake: Cultivating on Water

Floating Gardens of Inle Lake: Cultivating on Water - FWR5+W5J | Secret World Trip Planner

A farmer rows his canoe with one leg, gliding silently between rows of tomatoes that grow on the water. It is not an optical illusion: it is the daily reality of Inle Lake, in the Shan highlands, in the heart of Myanmar. At about 900 meters above sea level, this lake of about 116 square kilometers hosts one of the most ingenious and visually extraordinary agricultural techniques that exist: the floating gardens, called kyun in the local language.

These plots are not suspended in mid-air by magic, but anchored to the bottom with long bamboo poles. The farmers of the Intha community, the people who have lived on the shores and stilts of the lake for centuries, build rafts of aquatic vegetation, algae, and lake silt, creating fertile ground that literally floats on the surface of the water. Above these organic mats grow tomatoes, cucumbers, flowers, and a variety of vegetables that are then sold in local markets. Walking — or rather, navigating — among these rows of green is an experience that remains etched in memory.

How floating gardens work

The technique of floating gardens is the result of centuries of adaptation to an environment that does not allow traditional cultivation on dry land. The Intha farmers collect the aquatic vegetation that grows spontaneously in the lake, compress it into layers, and secure it with bamboo poles driven into the bottom, at depths that can exceed four meters. The result is a garden that moves slightly with the waves but remains stable enough to support adult plants.

The most surprising visual feature is the navigation technique: Intha rowers use one leg to operate the oar, wrapping it around the wooden shaft. This technique, called leg-rowing, frees both hands to cast fishing nets or maneuver between the rows of gardens. Seeing a fisherman or farmer balanced on the bow of his canoe carved from a single trunk, with one leg rowing in a precise rhythm, is one of the most iconic sights of Myanmar.

What to observe during the visit

While navigating through the gardens — the only way to visit them is aboard a motorboat or a canoe — you notice details that tell a lot about daily life. Bamboo poles emerge from the water at regular intervals, marking the boundaries between the properties of different families. Some plots are entirely dedicated to tomatoes, which represent one of the most profitable crops of the lake. Others host flowers used for offerings in the Buddhist monasteries that dot the shores.

The floating markets that rotate between the villages of the lake — following a precise biweekly schedule — are the place where the products from the gardens are sold directly from the boats. Arriving at the market in the early hours of the morning means seeing the entire supply chain: from the farmer loading tomatoes onto the canoe at dawn to the direct sale on the water, without intermediaries and without warehouses.

How to get there and when to visit

The starting point for visiting Inle Lake is the city of Nyaungshwe, accessible by bus from the city of Taunggyi, the capital of Shan State, or by domestic flights from Heho Airport, located about 35 kilometers from the lake. From Nyaungshwe, motorboats depart from the main canal and take about 20-30 minutes to reach the floating garden areas.

The best time to visit is between November and February, during the dry season, when the sky is clear and the morning light transforms the surface of the lake into a golden mirror. The most photogenic and least crowded hours are between six and nine in the morning, when the mist slowly rises and farmers begin their work among the rows. It is advisable to book a private boat rather than join group tours, to have the freedom to stop among the gardens without haste. The cost of a full day on a private boat generally ranges from 15,000 to 25,000 kyat, but rates vary and it is advisable to negotiate directly at the dock.

A fragile ecosystem to respect

Inle Lake is recognized as a wetland of international importance, and in recent decades it has faced serious problems related to pollution and the reduction of water surface area. The expansion of the floating gardens themselves, paradoxically, has contributed to the reduction of the lake's surface in some areas. Local authorities and some environmental organizations are working to find a balance between agricultural tradition and lake conservation.

For visitors, respecting the environment means avoiding throwing waste into the water, not disturbing farmers during their work, and preferring local operators who reinvest the proceeds into the Intha communities. Taking home a bag of tomatoes purchased directly from a farmer on the lake is perhaps the most authentic — and useful — souvenir one can find.
