Inaugurata nel 1778, durante il regno di Ferdinando IV di Borbone, fu costruita da Domenico Amedeo Orsini, cardinale e duca di Gravina, per dare alla città un maggior apporto idrico, utilizzando l’ acqua della sorgente Pozzo Pateo.
Crollata nel 1858 per cedimento del piano sottostante, fu ricostruita nella struttura attuale e un epigrafe, sempre del 1858 ne ricorda l’ avvenimento fornendoci il nome dell’ architetto Gaetano De Tommaso e dell’ allora sindaco Giuseppe Palmieri.
Esauritasi la sorgente alimentatrice, fu riattivata nel 1927 sotto il governo fascista, utilizzando le acque del Sele. La fontana è tutt’ ora funzionante e si trova in Piazza Notar Domenico, nel cuore monumentale del centro storico.
