A Fontana Maggiore foi construído entre 1278 e 1280 por Nicola e Giovanni Pisano, para celebrar a conclusión do novo acueduto. O proxecto é debido a FRA Bevignate, mentres que o hidráulica parte foi realizado por Boninsegna de Venecia.
A Fonte foi recibir a auga do monte Pacciano por máis de 700 anos.
Consta de dous superposición concéntricos concas, decorado con 50 baixos-relevancia e 24 de estatuas. O menor conca ten un baixo-relevo: escenas da tradición agraria, os meses do ano cos signos do zodíaco, as Artes Liberais, a Biblia e a historia de Roma. Superior conca consta de vinte e catro lousas separados por estatuas que representan alegórica, sagrados e figuras históricas.
As concas son encimado por unha Copa de Bronce coroado por un grupo de tres ninfas, representando os tres teolóxica virtudes (Fe, Esperanza, Caridade).
