Fort James Castle is one of Tobago's most important historical sites. Located in the northeastern part of the island, near the town of Plymouth, this ancient British castle dates back to the 17th century and was built to defend the island from pirate and French attacks. The castle has panoramic views of the coast and the Caribbean, and many original military structures, such as watchtowers, ammunition stores, and soldiers' barracks, are still present inside. Fort James Castle has seen numerous battles during its history, most famously in 1793, when the French attacked the castle with a large army of 400 men. Despite the attack, the castle held out and the British retained control over the island. Today, Fort James Castle is a popular tourist attraction, and many visitors come here to admire the historic architecture and scenic views.
