Inaugurado en 1778, durante el reinado de Fernando IV de Borbón, fue construido por Domenico Amedeo Orsini, cardenal y duque de Gravina, para dotar a la ciudad de un mayor suministro de agua, utilizando el agua del manantial Pozzo Pateo.
Se derrumbó en 1858 debido al hundimiento del piso inferior, y se reconstruyó en su estructura actual. Un epígrafe, también fechado en 1858, recuerda el suceso, dando el nombre del arquitecto Gaetano De Tommaso y del entonces alcalde Giuseppe Palmieri.
La fuente fue reactivada en 1927 bajo el gobierno fascista, utilizando las aguas del río Sele. La fuente sigue funcionando y se encuentra en la plaza Notar Domenico, en el corazón monumental del centro histórico.
