The extension of the West Highland Line to Mallaig occurred in 1901, providing a link between the city of Glasgow and the small fishing port of Mallaig. The two-track station at Glenfinnan retains many of the original features, including the "Swiss-style" station building, water tank, and oil store.

The West Highland between Glasgow and Fort William was built between 1889 and 1984; between Fort William and Banavie in 1895; and the Mallaig Extension Line between 1987 and 1901.

If you Google "Harry Potter bridge," you know you mean the Glenfinnan Viaduct, just north of the town of the same name, about half an hour west of Fort William.

Glenfinnan is a must-see when searching for Harry Potter locations in Scotland and is a place associated with Scotland's spectacular scenic wonders that make you fall in love with the land at first sight.

Majestic and impressive, the Glenfinnan Viaduct is 380 meters long, 30 meters high and adorned with 21 arches, each measuring 15 meters and crossing the Finnan River at the head of Loch Shiel. It represents a dramatic and iconic feature of the landscape.

The viaduct has appeared in several films including The Ring of Bright Water, Charlotte Gray, the Harry Potter films, and the TV series Monarch of the Glen. It is also featured on the Bank of Scotland's £10 bill.

Part of the viaduct is bordered by the road and you can chase it by car as we did but remember, the most spectacular sections can only be seen by boarding the steam train. Like Ron and Harry, you can chase the Hogwarts Express in a Ford Anglia rigged with magical powers and hope to get aboard the magic train.
