A few steps from the shore, the water changes color from light green to deep blue, and the steam rises slowly in the cold morning air. Lake Hévíz, in the northwest of Hungary about 6 kilometers from Lake Balaton, is a natural thermal basin of volcanic origin with a surface area of about 4.4 hectares — the largest biologically active thermal lake in the world. It is not an artificially heated pool: the water springs from an underground source at about 38 meters deep, maintaining a temperature between 33°C and 38°C at the surface throughout the year, which makes swimming possible even in mid-January.
What visually strikes you as soon as you arrive is the structure that overlooks part of the lake: a wooden pavilion in late 19th-century style, built on stilts directly over the water, which houses the changing rooms, access corridors, and some covered areas for bathers. The first organized bathing facilities on the lake date back to 1795, when Count György Festetics had the first facilities built to make the site accessible to visitors.
The source and properties of the water
The lake water is rich in minerals, particularly carbon dioxide, sulfates, and trace radon, elements that according to traditional spa medicine contribute to the treatment of rheumatic and joint disorders. The source completely renews the lake's water volume in about 72 hours, ensuring a constant quality. At the bottom of the basin, about 38 meters deep, the temperature exceeds 40°C, while at the surface it stabilizes around 33-36°C in summer and drops slightly in winter, without making the bath unpleasant.
One of the most characteristic elements of the lake are the water lilies and lotus flowers that cover part of the surface, especially in the summer months between June and September. This is not an artificial decoration: these plants grow spontaneously in the warm, shallow waters of the perimeter area. Swimming among the lotus flowers in a natural thermal lake is a visually unusual experience, hard to find elsewhere in Europe.

Access to the lake is through the thermal complex managed by Hévíz Gyógyfürdő, which includes not only the lake but also indoor pools, treatment areas, and spa services. The entrance ticket to the lake only, with access to the basic facilities, is around 20-25 euros for a full day, but prices vary depending on the season and the duration of the visit. The average time visitors spend in the water is 2-3 hours, but many choose to combine bathing with internal treatments. The covered facilities on the lake allow you to sit on the water even when it rains, making Hévíz a valid destination in any weather condition. The wooden corridors connecting the central pavilion to the water entry areas are an architectural detail worth observing closely: they clearly show the signs of various restoration interventions layered over time.
When to go and how to get there
The busiest months are July and August, when the lines at the entrance can become significantly longer. The best time for a peaceful visit is late spring (May) or autumn (September-October), when the outside temperatures are pleasant, the lotus flowers are still present or just blooming, and the number of visitors is more manageable. Winter has a special charm — the contrast between the cold air and warm water creates a dense fog over the lake — but the outdoor facilities are less accessible.
Hévíz is easily reached from Budapest in about 2 and a half hours by car, or by regional trains to Keszthely (the nearest station, about 7 km away) and then by local bus or taxi. Direct buses to Hévíz also depart regularly from Keszthely. Those staying in the Lake Balaton area can reach Hévíz in less than 15 minutes by car from Keszthely itself, making it a natural stop for those exploring that part of western Hungary.
Practical tips for the visit
Bringing pool slippers is highly recommended: the bottom of the lake is soft and muddy in some areas, and the wooden walkways can be slippery. Many visitors also bring a lightweight thermal blanket for breaks outside the water. It is possible to rent floating mats directly at the entrance, useful for relaxing without actively swimming. Arriving at opening time — generally around 8:00 in the morning — allows you to enjoy the lake in its quietest atmosphere, before the bulk of organized groups arrive.
