
The water here does not flow. It stopped centuries ago, crystallized in shapes that look like frozen waves in mid-air, suspended on the edge of a cliff that drops into the valley of Oaxaca. Hierve el Agua — literally "the water boils" — takes its name from the natural effervescence of the mineral springs that feed these formations, although it is not heat but dissolved carbon dioxide in the water. The visual result is among the most unusual in Mexico: waterfalls of white travertine that seem to descend from the rock but are, in fact, immobile for millennia.

The site is located in the state of Oaxaca, in the Sierra Mixteca, about 70 kilometers from the capital of the same name, accessible by winding mountain roads that rise among agaves and nopales. The altitude of the plateau where the natural pools are located exceeds 1,500 meters above sea level, and this contributes to making the air crystal clear and the light particularly intense during the central hours of the day. Even from the entrance of the site, before approaching the edge, one can sense something unusual in the air: a faint mineral smell, almost metallic, that accompanies every step towards the springs.
The travertine formations: what to see at the edge

The two main waterfalls of Hierve el Agua are known as Big Waterfall and Small Waterfall. The former is the most spectacular: a white, rugged flow that descends about 12 meters along the rock face, formed by the accumulation of calcium carbonate deposited by spring water over thousands of years. Approaching the edge, one can observe the texture of the rock: it is not smooth like marble, but corrugated, almost coral-like, with small horizontal stalactites pointing towards the void.
The panorama that opens up when looking towards the valley is clear and unobstructed: dry hills, distant villages, and silence interrupted only by the wind. There is no roar of a real waterfall, no mist of water hitting your face. Instead, there is an unusual quietness for a place that carries the idea of movement in its name. This absence of sound is part of the experience: the contrast between the dynamic shape of the waterfalls and the absolute stillness that characterizes them strikes in a physical way, almost disorienting.

Natural pools and swimming in mineral waters
At the top of the plateau, before the edge, there are natural pools where it is possible to swim. The water has a color that ranges from aquamarine to opaque turquoise, due to the concentration of dissolved minerals, mainly calcium carbonate and magnesium. The temperature is cool but not cold, around 22-24 degrees during the central hours of the day, and the sensation on the skin is slightly viscous due to the minerals.

The pools have been partially shaped by human intervention over the years to make them accessible to visitors, but the walls and the bottom retain their original travertine nature. Swimming here means literally floating on a petrified waterfall, with the emptiness of the valley just a few meters away. It is advisable to wear rock sandals: the bottom is uneven and slippery. Restrooms and some small refreshment facilities are available at the entrance of the site.
How to get there and when to visit

From Oaxaca city, the most common way to reach Hierve el Agua is to rent a car or join one of the many organized tours that depart every morning from the historic center. The drive takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes and includes stretches on dirt roads in the last kilometers. Alternatively, you can take a collective bus to the village of San Lorenzo Albarradas and then a local taxi to the site.
The best time to visit is early in the morning, preferably by 9:00-10:00, before the organized tours from Oaxaca start arriving in large numbers. On weekends and during the months of July and August, the site can become crowded, with queues at the pools. The dry season, between November and April, offers better visibility of the landscape and safer trails. The entrance fee to the site is managed by the local community and is around 50-70 Mexican pesos, equivalent to a few euros.
A site with ancient roots
The springs of Hierve el Agua were known and used as early as pre-Hispanic times. Archaeological research has documented the presence of Zapotec irrigation systems dating back over two thousand years, which utilized mineral waters for terraced agriculture. Some of these channels are still partially visible in the area surrounding the main pools, carved into the rock or covered with limestone deposits.
This stratification — between geological nature, ancient agricultural use, and contemporary tourism — makes the site something more complex than a simple visual attraction. Walking along the paths that line the edge of the cliff, one encounters informational panels in Spanish that tell the geology of the place and the history of the community of San Isidro Roaguía, the village that manages the site and derives income from it. It is a concrete reminder that this landscape belongs to someone, and has been preserved for centuries before becoming a tourist destination.
