The sand is truly pink. It is not an effect of the sunset light nor a photographic trick: walking barefoot on Horseshoe Bay, in the parish of Southampton in Bermuda, you can feel under your fingers a soft and colorful grain that is unlike any other beach in the world. That characteristic pink color comes from the natural crushing of corals and shells, particularly from the shells of a microscopic foraminifera called Homotrema rubrum, which lives on the surrounding coral reefs and, once dead, settles on the shores mixing with the white limestone sand.
Horseshoe Bay is located along the southern coast of Bermuda, facing the Atlantic Ocean, and is considered the most representative beach of the archipelago. The bay gets its name from the horseshoe shape that the shore draws, clearly visible from above or by looking at the coastline from one of the limestone promontories that delimit it. Access is managed by the Bermuda government through the South Shore Park, a protected area that also includes other smaller beaches connected by coastal paths.
The color of the water and the natural environment
The water of Horseshoe Bay changes shades depending on the depth and the time of day. In the area closest to the shore, where the bottoms are shallow and sandy, the sea takes on an almost unreal turquoise color, similar to that of the Caribbean but with a brightness characteristic of Atlantic waters. As one moves further out to sea, the color shifts to a deep cobalt blue, indicating an increase in depth. This chromatic transition is one of the most immediate visual spectacles that the beach offers.
The formations of Bermuda limestone, whitish rocks eroded by wind and saltwater, emerge on the sides of the main bay creating small natural coves. Some of these side coves, accessible by foot along the shore during low tide, offer rocky bottoms ideal for snorkeling. It is common to spot colorful tropical fish, sea urchins, and, with a bit of luck, sea turtles that frequent the Bermudian waters.
The pink sand: what to observe up close
To truly appreciate the uniqueness of the sand, it is worth collecting it in your hand and observing it against the light. The pink and orange grains are clearly distinguishable from the white and transparent ones of pure limestone. The percentage of colored sand varies from point to point along the beach: in the areas closest to the rocks, where erosion is more intense, the pink tends to concentrate more. This variation is visible to the naked eye and makes every corner of the bay slightly different from the others.
The beach stretches for about half a kilometer in its main section, but South Shore Park as a whole covers a much larger area, with access to several smaller bays. During the summer months, between June and August, Horseshoe Bay is frequented by both tourists arriving from cruise ships docked in Hamilton or at King's Wharf, as well as by Bermudian residents who consider it a weekend landmark.
How to get there and practical tips
The beach can be reached from the capital Hamilton in about twenty minutes by scooter or taxi along South Road. Bermuda does not offer car rentals for foreign tourists, but two-seater scooters can be rented from several local operators at daily rates around 50-70 Bermudian dollars. Alternatively, the public bus service connects Hamilton to Horseshoe Bay with line number 7, with frequent stops during the tourist season.
The best time to visit the beach is early in the morning, between 8 and 10, when the slanting light enhances the colors of the sand and the number of visitors is still manageable. In the afternoon, especially on days when large cruise ships are in port, the beach can become crowded. There is a kiosk offering rental of sun loungers and umbrellas, as well as a light catering service. Beware of currents: despite its calm appearance, some areas of the main bay can experience strong waves, and it is advisable to heed the warnings of lifeguards present during the summer season.
The atmosphere and the Bermudian context
What distinguishes Horseshoe Bay from many tropical beaches is a certain composure of the surrounding environment. There are no intrusive commercial structures, nor loud music: the natural park has maintained a sober character that reflects the overall style of Bermuda, a British overseas territory with its own distinct cultural identity. The paths connecting the side coves traverse typical coastal vegetation of the archipelago, with Bermudian cedars and succulent plants adapted to the salty wind.
Visiting Horseshoe Bay also means confronting the fragility of this ecosystem. The coral reefs that produce the pink sand are sensitive to changes in water temperature and ocean acidification. Taking away sand or shells is prohibited by Bermudian law, a rule that respectful visitors should keep in mind before giving in to the temptation of a natural souvenir.
