Det blev bygget (slutningen af 3. - begyndelsen af 2.cent. BC) i Opus africanum ved hjælp af Sarno kalksten, med tufa brugt til de dekorative dele. Det er især berømt for sine to relieffer–hvoraf den ene er blevet stjålet, den anden (i opbevaring) udsmykning lararium (indenlandske sacellum)–der levende afbildet i populær måde virkningerne af jordskælvet (62 AD) på nogle af de offentlige bygninger i Pompeji. Til venstre for tablinum er et støbt portræt af bankmand L. Caecilius iucundus, der boede i huset i 79 E.kr., og hvis arkiv med 154 voksede tabletter er fundet: disse registrerer de beløb, han betalte mellem 52 og 62 E. kr. til folk, på vegne af hvem han havde solgt varer (især slaver) eller indsamlet husleje, idet han holdt en provision på 1-4% for sig selv.
