Ya existía una capilla en el siglo VIII-IX, pero fue demolida para dar paso a la iglesia parroquial románica dedicada a Santa María, mencionada en una bula de 1186 del Papa Urbano III. De esa época se conservan el campanario y algunos muros del presbiterio. De hecho, hacia 1570 se derribó la iglesia románica y se construyó un nuevo edificio sagrado dedicado a San Juan Bautista. Además de los altares, la iglesia contiene verdaderas obras maestras, como la sillería del coro en el presbiterio y las sillas y el banco de madera de la sacristía, obra del escultor Giacomo Luchini de principios del siglo XVIII.
