The Municipal Railway Park of Kalamata is a remarkable open-air museum that serves as a fascinating window into the history of rail travel in Greece. Its location in one of the most central parts of Kalamata makes it an easily accessible attraction, both for tourists and locals alike.
Founded in September 1986 and completed in 1990 due to setbacks from a devastating earthquake, the park is spread across 54 acres. It showcases an array of historic and significant railway artifacts. With 24.6 acres granted by OSE (Hellenic Railway Agency), 28 acres from the municipality of Kalamata, and 1.4 acres from the Agricultural Bank of Greece, the park provides ample space for its extensive collection.
The Museum's focal point is the 'Kalamata-Limin/Port' Old Station, a two-story building that exudes historical charm. Visitors can explore four boarding platforms, an entrance kiosk, and a water tower, each offering insights into the operations of a bygone era. Among the museum's most prized exhibits are its seven locomotives and one diesel wagon, alongside other intriguing artifacts like manual cranes, first-class passenger vehicles, and a variety of trucks dating from 1885 to 1947.
The Municipal Railway Park isn't just about trains; it also includes recreational facilities such as basketball and volleyball courts, as well as playgrounds for children. Various associations, including the Association of Friends of the Railway of Messinia (SFSM), have found a home within the park, further enriching its historical and cultural significance.
An added touch of modernity exists in the form of a snack bar located on the ground floor of the main park building, while the first floor is granted to the Railway Club and OSE.SA.
