The Øresund Strait flows just a few meters from its walls, and from the top of the bastions, the Swedish coast of Helsingborg is clearly visible. Kronborg, perched on the northern tip of the Danish island of Sjælland, is not simply an intact medieval castle: it is a Renaissance fortress that has defined commercial control between the Baltic Sea and the North Sea for centuries, collecting tolls from every passing ship. This strategic function, more than any literary legend, explains its architectural grandeur.
The castle that visitors can walk through today was rebuilt between 1574 and 1585 at the behest of Danish King Frederick II, designed by the Flemish architect Anthonis Opbergen. The structure replaced a previous castle, called Krogen, which occupied the same promontory. In 1629, a devastating fire destroyed much of the interiors, but spared the royal chapel: Frederick III oversaw the reconstruction, and the external appearance seen today largely reflects that second construction phase of the 17th century. UNESCO recognized the site as a World Heritage Site in 2000.
The external architecture: towers, bastions, and green copper
Approaching Kronborg from the city of Helsingør, the first thing that strikes is the color: the oxidized copper roofs of the four corner towers have taken on a green-gray hue over the centuries that contrasts with the light sandstone walls. The towers are crowned with slender spires that give the whole a distinctive profile, visible even from the ferry that connects Helsingør to Helsingborg in about twenty minutes.
The castle is surrounded by a star-shaped bastion system typical of Renaissance military architecture, designed to withstand the artillery of the time. The moat that runs along the perimeter is partly still present. Entering through the drawbridge and the main gate, one finds themselves in the quadrangular inner courtyard: the facades that delimit it show mullioned windows and stone decorations that recall the Dutch style of the late Renaissance, consistent with the Flemish origin of the architect.
The interiors: the Great Hall and the royal chapel
The Great Hall of Kronborg is one of the largest Renaissance ballrooms in Northern Europe, with a length of about 62 meters. Today it is largely bare, as the fire of 1629 destroyed original furnishings and decorations, but the proportions of the space remain extraordinary. On the wooden floor and along the walls, one can still read the signs of the transformations that have occurred over time.
The royal chapel, which survived the fire, instead preserves the furnishings from the late 16th century almost intact: the carved wooden benches, the gallery reserved for the royal family, and the historic organ make this environment the most authentic in the entire castle. Light filters through large windows overlooking the courtyard, creating a collected atmosphere that is different from the military grandeur of the exterior.
The casemates: under the castle with Olaf the Sleepy
Under the foundations of Kronborg extends a network of casemates, dark galleries that in the past served as storage, prison, and refuge for soldiers in case of siege. Today they can be visited with lamps provided at the entrance, and the experience of walking through them is physically very different from the rest of the castle: the humidity, the raw stone, and the almost total absence of natural light make the environment authentically oppressive.
In one of the underground corridors is the statue of Holger Danske, a legendary hero of Nordic tradition, depicted sitting and asleep with a beard that descends to the stone table. According to legend, he will awaken when Denmark needs him. The statue has become one of the most photographed symbols of the castle, and it is worth going down to the casemates just to see it.
How to visit Kronborg: practical information
Kronborg is located just a few minutes' walk from the Helsingør train station, reachable by train from Copenhagen in about 45 minutes on the regional line. The entrance ticket to the castle costs approximately between 95 and 145 Danish crowns for adults, with seasonal variations. To visit both the royal apartments and the casemates, a combined ticket is required, which is advisable to purchase online to avoid queues.
The minimum time for a complete visit is about two hours, but those who want to explore the outer bastions and stop in the chapel will take at least three. The summer months, from June to August, are the busiest: arriving at opening time, around 10:00, allows you to visit the Great Hall and the casemates before organized groups fill the spaces. In winter, the castle reduces its opening hours, but the atmosphere is definitely quieter and the deserted bastions offer a perspective on the strait that is difficult to enjoy calmly in summer.
