About Kungsleden South: From Ammarnäs to Hemavan Trail

The first step out of Ammarnäs immediately places your feet in the reality of Swedish Lapland: a dirt path that descends towards a watercourse, surrounded by low birches and white lichens that cover the stones like still snow. This is the southern section of the Kungsleden, the famous King's Trail, which connects Ammarnäs to Hemavan, covering about 78 kilometers through the county of Västerbotten. Compared to the northern section between Abisko and Kebnekaise, frequented by thousands of hikers every summer, this portion remains surprisingly quiet.

The route does not traverse a wild and uninhabited landscape in the romantic sense of the term. It is, on the contrary, a living territory, used for centuries: the summer grazing lands of the Sami, the indigenous people of northern Scandinavia, who still today lead their reindeer herds along ancient migratory routes. Walking here means sharing the space with a culture that is not a museum artifact but a daily practice still ongoing.

The route: from Ammarnäs southward

The starting village, Ammarnäs, is located in the Vindel river valley, accessible by car or seasonal bus services from Sorsele. The village has few permanent residents but offers essential facilities for hikers, including a small shop and accommodation options. From here, the trail gradually ascends towards the open plateaus, the so-called fjäll, where the vegetation becomes sparse and the sky takes center stage in the landscape.

The overall elevation gain is not extreme: the highest point of the route is around 1,000 meters above sea level, but the continuous changes in altitude and the often muddy or rocky terrain make the walk physically demanding. The STF (Svenska Turistföreningen, the Swedish Tourist Association) manages a series of equipped cabins along the route, the fjällstugor, spaced out to make it possible to walk in daily stages of reasonable length, generally between 12 and 20 kilometers.

Landscape and wildlife: what you really see

The birch valleys are the most immediate visual characteristic of the southern stretch. Unlike the taller conifers found at lower altitudes, the fjäll birches grow crooked, low, with white trunks and bark that peels in thin layers. In August, the best time for walking, the foliage is still green but already showing the first signs of autumn yellow. The contrast with the northern sky — often white-gray, sometimes suddenly blue — is one of the most characteristic visual effects.

Reindeer are encountered with real frequency, not sporadically. They do not necessarily flee at the approach of hikers, but it is important not to disturb them and not to put obstacles between the animals and their path. Dogs are not allowed in this section of the Kungsleden during the summer period precisely to protect the herds. Along the way, you can also spot reindeer with ear tags applied by the Sami herders, a visible sign that each animal belongs to a specific family and is part of a regulated breeding system.

The Sami culture along the trail

The southern Kungsleden is not just a nature trail: it crosses territories that the Sami people have used for summer grazing for generations. At certain points along the route, temporary wooden and wire enclosures can be observed, used during the reindeer marking and selection season. These elements are not decorative installations: they are active working tools.

In Ammarnäs, there is a small Sami community, the Ran Sami village, one of the reindeer herding communities recognized by the Swedish state. The relationship between hikers and herders requires mutual respect: the trails cross private properties and collectively used lands regulated by Swedish law. Being informed about any seasonal restrictions before departure is part of the necessary preparation.

Practical tips for tackling the journey

The recommended period to traverse this section is from the end of June to mid-September. Before that date, the ground may still be snow-covered or flooded from the melting snow; after September, temperatures drop rapidly and the STF cabins close. Booking the cabins in advance through the STF website is essential in July and August, when even this lesser-known stretch sees an increase in visitors.

The equipment must include waterproof clothing even in the height of summer, as weather conditions can change rapidly. The crossings of small streams are part of the route and bridges are not always present. Mosquitoes and midges are abundant in the central weeks of summer: a protective face net and an effective repellent are not optional. The final destination, Hemavan, has a small airport with seasonal connections to Stockholm, making it possible to organize the trip in one direction without having to return to the starting point.
