Top of the World
Kutná Hora, also known as the Silver City, is a great place to visit for many reasons. It has some beautiful churches and homes with a population of over 40,000. And while there may be quite a few people here, it definitely has a nice small town feel. Once the second most important city in Bohemia after Prague, Kutná Hora is still famous as "the treasure chest of the Bohemian Kingdom". Its wealth came mainly from silver mines and it was here that the first Bohemian silver coin introduced by the monetary reform of Wenceslas II was minted. Fallen into oblivion following the exhaustion of the mines and the devastation caused by the Hussite wars and the fire of 1770, Kutná Hora has found new splendor thanks to tourism. In 1995, recognition came that does justice to the rich historical heritage and uniqueness of this town: it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Reachable in about one hour from Prague, Kutná Hora will allow you to get your fill of emotions in just one day thanks to a nice city center, interesting monuments to visit, a good wine to taste and a scary chapel where the decorations are made of... human remains!
