Seen from above, it looks like a piece of chewing gum that accidentally fell in the midst of the green Australian vegetation and the deep blue of the Indian Ocean. Lake Hillier is located on Middle Island, the largest of the islands in the Recherche archipelago, off the coast of Esperance in Western Australia, and its bright pink color is not a photographic effect or an optical illusion: it is real, persistent, and remains so even when the water is collected in a clear bottle.

The best time to visit is between October and April, when the weather conditions are more stable and the sunlight enhances the intensity of the pink color.
