The Mausoleum of Halicarnassus, also known as the Mausoleum of Mausolus, was an imposing funerary monument built in the 4th century BC in honor of King Mausolus, who ruled the city of Halicarnassus (present-day Bodrum in Turkey).The mausoleum was considered one of the masterpieces of ancient architecture and was included among the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. It was built of white marble and had impressive dimensions, with a base 32 meters long and 28 meters wide, and a height of about 45 meters.The structure was divided into three main parts: the base, the main body of the mausoleum, and the top. The base was decorated with sculptures depicting scenes from daily life and Greek myths, while the body of the mausoleum had Ionic and Corinthian columns. The top, on the other hand, housed a quadriga with four horses pulling Mausolus' hearse.Unfortunately, the mausoleum was severely damaged by earthquakes and invasions over the centuries, and today only a few ruins of the base and the remains of the main body remain. However, the grandeur and beauty of the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus inspired many later works of art and architecture, making it an important testimony to ancient Greek art and culture.
