About Meloria Lighthouses

Meloria Lighthouses - Torre della Meloria | Secret World Trip Planner

The two lighthouses were built by the Italian Navy between 1950 and 1960 for the night lighting of the insidious shoals to the boats in transit in the marine tract to the north and south. Previously there was a trellis lighthouse with a hexagonal lantern next to the historic Torre della Meloria, which was activated in 1867 and was no longer considered suitable for illuminating the entire area of the shoals. The infrastructure of the northern lighthouse consists of a white tower with a circular section, 18 meters high, with an internal gallery, culminating in a terrace on which rests the lantern gray metal tiburium, also circular, flanked by solar panels that allow the power supply. The infrastructure of the southern lighthouse consists of a tower with a circular section, painted black in the lower part and yellow in the upper one, 18 meters high, with an internal gallery, culminating with a terrace on which rests the lantern's cupola of gray metal, also a circular section, flanked on the southern sector by the solar panel that allows the power supply.

Frequently Asked Questions

The two lighthouses were constructed by the Italian Navy between 1950 and 1960 to safely illuminate the dangerous Meloria shoals for boats transiting the marine area. They replaced an older trellis lighthouse with a hexagonal lantern that had been in operation since 1867 but was no longer adequate for lighting the entire shoal area.
Both lighthouses stand 18 meters tall with circular sections and internal galleries, but they have distinct appearances. The northern lighthouse features a white tower with a gray metal circular lantern, while the southern lighthouse is painted black in the lower section and yellow in the upper section, also topped with a gray metal circular lantern cupola.
Both lighthouses are powered by solar panels mounted on their terraces next to the lanterns. The northern lighthouse has solar panels flanking its lantern, while the southern lighthouse has a solar panel positioned on its southern sector, making them self-sufficient and environmentally sustainable.
Yes, the historic Torre della Meloria stands adjacent to the modern lighthouses and dates back centuries in the region's maritime history. This original structure preceded the current pair of lighthouses and represents an important part of the area's navigation heritage.
The Meloria Lighthouses provide night lighting for the notoriously insidious Meloria shoals, guiding boats safely through this dangerous marine area during their transit northbound and southbound. The dual lighthouse system ensures comprehensive illumination of the entire shoal area that a single lighthouse could not adequately cover.
