Mining town of Røros

In 1980, the mining town of Røros was added to the UNESCO World Heritage list. The 333 years of mining and urban agriculture have created a truly unique town in the mountains.

The mining town has retained much of its original character, in its road layout from the 1600s and wooden houses from the 1700s and 1800s. The natural environment of the area is wonderful and secluded, with the old logging river routes providing a way to paddle between the various lakes.

In 2010, the World Heritage Site was expanded to include the surrounding area, which is called the 'Circumference'. The motivation is the important evidence that the 'Circumference' provides us with about how mining activities took place and how the inhabitants adapted to the mountainous terrain, local nature and cold climate
