Moncalieri is one of the most beautiful Cities in Piedmont, is a City of Art nestled between the present and the past and is located in the province of Turin from which it is just 9 km away.Nestled between the Po River and the hills of Turin, Moncalieri is famous both for the presence of the Savoy Castle and because it was "The City of the Proclamation" as it was here that the famous "Proclamation of Moncalieri" was signed, which was one of the greatest events of the Italian Risorgimento.Present-day Moncalieri composed of several hamlets and divided into many neighborhoods has not always been such a large town.In the 10th century Moncalieri did not yet exist. In its place was only Testona, which today is one of its hamlets. Testona was first a Roman and then a Lombard village, but being in a strategic position and in the center of a plain, the bishops, who controlled the communication routes, markets and trade on the roads to Asti, Turin and the Gauls, took control.Between 1227 and 1229 there were conflicts between Asti and Chieri that prompted the rulers to move the settlement to the banks of the Po.Thus Mons Calerius, Our Moncalieri, was born.The town is and especially was located between the river and the hill, in an excellent position: not only defensive, but also commercial as it was the easiest way to move to Turin, Southern Piedmont and Liguria. In fact, here, the river was still quite narrow and therefore easy to cross. In this way traders could avoid crossing the tributaries of the Po.
