En las afueras de San Luis, al otro lado de la frontera estatal, se encuentra el Parque Histórico Estatal de los Montículos de Cahokia. Los montículos de Cahokia son un hito fascinante formado por los indios americanos que vivieron allí hace más de 800 años. Se cree que los montículos representan la mayor ciudad precolombina al norte de México.
Quedan 69 montículos que ahora están cubiertos de hierba. El mayor de estos montículos es el Monks Mound, y tiene más de 30 metros de altura. Otra parte interesante de Cahokia es Woodhenge, un gran círculo formado por 48 postes de madera que se alinea con el calendario solar, lo que lo hace muy similar a Stonehenge en Inglaterra.
