Mount Cotugno and the largest clay dam in Europe

The Monte Cotugno dam is a dam built between 1970 and 1982 in the territory of the municipality of Senise along the course of the river Sinni. It is the largest earth dam in Europe. The wall of the dam measures in length 1850 m in height 60 m, it is 260 m wide at the base.The ancient village, of Norman origins, develops at the foot of the medieval castle and is an inextricable labyrinth of narrow streets, old houses and alleys decorated with precious and crisp purple necklaces left to dry in the sun on the balconies: the "Cruschi" Igp peppers, a Lucanian delicacy now known even beyond the regional borders and protagonist of the renowned food and wine festival "U Strittul ru Zafaran". The landscape surrounding Senise is crossed by immense expanses of olive groves and natural sites rich in vegetation, while the "base" of the town culminates in the "Giardini", plots of land of extraordinary impact that descend towards the Serrapotamo stream. The village was the birthplace of Nicola Sole, Italian patriot, poet and lawyer.
