About Ohrid Boardwalk: The Lake with Sunken Ruins

Ohrid Boardwalk: The Lake with Sunken Ruins - 4Q6V+GJ3 | Secret World Trip Planner

Under the transparent surface of Lake Ohrid, a few meters from the shore, lie the remains of a paleochristian basilica dating back to the 4th century. This is not a local legend nor an attraction built for tourists: the stone foundations are visible to the naked eye on sunny days, partially submerged in the shallow waters that touch the lakeside of Ohrid. It is one of those rare encounters where history literally surfaces.

Lake Ohrid is one of the oldest lakes in Europe, with an estimated age of between three and five million years, and it hosts dozens of endemic species of aquatic fauna that do not exist anywhere else in the world. The city of Ohrid, on its eastern shores in North Macedonia, has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1979 — a recognition that encompasses both the historic center and the lake itself. The lakeside promenade, or boardwalk, is the thread that connects all of this: a walk that links the port, the medieval churches perched on the hills, and the extraordinarily clear waters of the lake basin.

The submerged ruins: visible history underwater

The partially submerged paleochristian basilica in the waters of the lake is one of the most extraordinary elements that a visitor can observe along the lakeside. The structures date back to the 4th century AD, a period when Ohrid — then called Lichnidos — was already an important center of the region. The stone foundations emerge from the shallow waters in a nearly theatrical manner, as if the lake had decided to preserve them instead of museums.

Those who want to get really close can do so by boat or, under the right conditions, by snorkeling: the water visibility, which reaches up to 22 meters deep in some areas of the coastline, allows for observing the details of the masonry structures with surprising clarity. It is not necessary to be an expert diver for this stretch, but it is advisable to check the local conditions before diving, as some areas are subject to restrictions for the protection of heritage.

Walking along the lakeside: what you can see

The boardwalk of Ohrid stretches along the lakeshore for several kilometers, connecting the city center with the more peripheral areas to the south. Walking along the lakeside, you encounter moored fishing boats, small cafés with tables overlooking the water, and, looking up towards the hill, the unmistakable silhouette of the Church of St. John at Kaneo, built in the 13th century on a rocky spur overlooking the lake. It is one of the most photographed images in the Balkans, and the view from below, at water level, is completely different from that seen when climbing up to the church.

Along the pedestrian path, you can also observe the remains of ancient structures integrated into the urban landscape: Ohrid is a layered city, where the Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman periods visibly overlap. The Roman theater, dating back to the 2nd-3rd century AD, is located a short distance from the lakeside and is one of the best-preserved in the region.

The lake as a unique ecosystem

Walking on the boardwalk also means bordering an ecosystem that science has been studying for decades. Lake Ohrid is considered a living museum of evolution: it hosts over 200 endemic species, including the famous Ohrid trout (Salmo letnica), a fish that is not found in any other lake in the world and that appears on the menus of local restaurants. Fishing is regulated and some areas of the lake are subject to protection, but the Ohrid trout remains one of the most sought-after dishes in Macedonian cuisine.

The waters of the lake have exceptional transparency due to the combination of underground springs that feed the basin and the low concentration of nutrients. This makes them particularly suitable for underwater observation, but also vulnerable: the increase in tourism and construction development in coastal areas are topics debated at both local and international levels.

Practical tips for visiting the lakeside

The best time to stroll along the boardwalk is early in the morning, before the summer heat becomes intense and before organized groups arrive. In summer, between July and August, Ohrid is one of the most popular destinations in the Balkans, and the lakeside can become crowded during the central hours of the day. The morning light is also what makes the submerged ruins more visible, thanks to the angle of the sunlight on the water.

To reach Ohrid, you can take a bus from Skopje, with a journey of about three hours, or by plane to Ohrid International Airport, which serves European destinations mainly during the summer season. The lakeside is accessible for free and does not require a ticket. For a boat excursion to the submerged ruins, prices vary depending on the local operator, but they are generally short and affordable trips. Wearing comfortable shoes is essential: the path alternates between paved sections and others on uneven surfaces.
