The opera house was seriously damaged during air raids during World War II. The building was intended for demolition, but a citizens' initiative founded by the city's residents raised funds for the reconstruction of the opera. The authors of the reconstruction project were Helmut Braun and Martin Schlockermann.

The Old Opera has several congress rooms and two concert halls: the Great Hall with more than 2,500 spectators and the Mozart Hall with 700 seats for chamber music. The activity of the new facility was inaugurated in 1981 with the 8th Symphony of Gustav Mahler.
