About Old Square

Old Square - Bergamo | Secret World Trip Planner

Piazza Vecchia is the oldest heart of the city; it is "one of the most fascinating squares in the world," as Le Corbusier wrote after seeing it one evening at sunset. Created after the demolition of medieval houses and stores, it is a Renaissance space with a fountain in the center donated in 1780 by podestà Contarini. Enclosed on either side by historic buildings such as the Palazzo del Podestà, the Palazzo della Ragione, which dates back to the 12th century but was rebuilt in the 15th-15th centuries with the lion of St. Mark, bearing witness to the rule of the Serenissima. Then the imposing medieval Town Hall Tower stands out above them all, which even today, at 10 p.m., makes its 100 chimes, in memory of when the city gates were closed. In Piazza Vecchia on the third Sunday of each month (except August) the Mercantico : Antiques Market takes place.

Frequently Asked Questions

Piazza Vecchia is the oldest heart of the city and has been called "one of the most fascinating squares in the world" by renowned architect Le Corbusier after witnessing it at sunset. Created after demolishing medieval houses and stores, it represents a stunning Renaissance space that has captivated visitors for centuries.
The square is surrounded by remarkable historic structures including the Palazzo del Podestà, the Palazzo della Ragione (originally from the 12th century but rebuilt in the 15th century with the lion of St. Mark symbolizing Venetian rule), and the imposing medieval Town Hall Tower that dominates the skyline. The fountain in the center was donated in 1780 by podestà Contarini.
The medieval Town Hall Tower rings 100 chimes every evening at 10 p.m., a tradition that commemorates when the city gates were historically closed at this hour. This atmospheric sound is one of the unique experiences visitors can encounter at the square.
The Mercantico antiques market takes place on the third Sunday of each month at Piazza Vecchia, except during August when it doesn't operate. This is the perfect time to visit if you're interested in browsing unique vintage and antique items in this historic setting.
Sunset is the ideal time to experience Piazza Vecchia's magic, as Le Corbusier himself discovered when he visited the square in the evening light.
