About Piedmont: Orridi di Uriezzo

Piedmont: Orridi di Uriezzo - 28866 Premia VB | Secret World Trip Planner

Did you know that even in Piedmont there are canyons? Well yes, in Antigorio Valley, in the province of Verbano-Cusio-Ossola, there are a series of gorges dug into the granite by streams that in the past flowed downstream of the Toce Glacier and called Orridi di Uriezzo. The Orridi are characterized by a series of large sub-circular cavities separated by narrow and tortuous passages. The walls are all sculpted by niches and grooves produced by the whirling and violent motion of waterfalls. At certain points they get so close that from the bottom they do not allow the view of the sky. South Gorge: called by the locals Tomba d'Uriezzo,[2] is the most spectacular, about 200 m long and 20 to 30 meters deep North-Eastern Gorge: about 100 m long and about ten deep, very narrow at some points Western Gorge: less characteristic, formed by two distinct sections. A fourth gorge, which takes the name of Vallaccia, is located just below the Church of Baceno, but is difficult to access and ends with a jump on the river Devero.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Orridi di Uriezzo are a series of spectacular canyons carved into granite by ancient glacier streams in the Antigorio Valley, located in the province of Verbano-Cusio-Ossola in Piedmont. These gorges are characterized by large sub-circular cavities and narrow, winding passages sculpted by the powerful motion of waterfalls over time.
The South Gorge, known locally as Tomba d'Uriezzo, is the most spectacular and dramatic of the four gorges, stretching approximately 200 meters long and reaching depths of 20 to 30 meters. At certain points, the walls are so close together that you cannot see the sky from the bottom of the canyon.
There are four main gorges: the South Gorge (Tomba d'Uriezzo), the most spectacular; the North-Eastern Gorge, about 100 meters long and narrow in places; the Western Gorge, which is less characteristic and has two distinct sections; and the Vallaccia, located below the Church of Baceno but difficult to access. The Vallaccia ends with a dramatic drop into the Devero river.
The gorges are distinguished by their unique sculptured walls covered in niches and grooves created by the violent whirling motion of waterfalls and streams that once flowed from the Toce Glacier. The rock formations include large sub-circular cavities connected by narrow, tortuous passages that create an otherworldly canyon landscape rare in Piedmont.
While the Vallaccia gorge offers a dramatic natural feature—ending with a waterfall plunge into the Devero river—it is difficult to access compared to the other three gorges. Most visitors focus on the South Gorge and North-Eastern Gorge, which are more easily reached and equally spectacular.
