Pievebovigliana

Pievebovigliana, a small village in the province of Macerata, has a very ancient origin: settlements, Neolithic pottery, iron-age clay material show that primitive man chose the valley of the Chienti and its tributaries, among which the Fornace, from which the history of the village starts. Whoever arrives in Pievebovigliana must climb the evocative streets and stairways of the castle, which constitutes the historic centre of the town. Of the castle, destroyed in 1528, only a few buildings remain, while the ancient "vessel" shaped structure is still clearly legible. Among the houses of the settlement, which preserves its medieval urban layout, there are picturesque and evocative views. In the heart of the historical centre, there is the church of Santa Maria Assunta with a crypt dating back to the XI century. Inside the town hall it is possible to visit the Museum of Pievebovigliana, composed of a complex of museums. In fact they are part of: the Archaeological Museum "Valerio Cianfarani" (which collects the findings found in the municipal area, including a vague anthropomorphic glass paste of Phoenician-Punic production of the fourth century BC and a female head in clay, belonging to the Middle-Italic tradition of the Ili-li century BC), the Civic Museum "Raffaele Campelli" (with works by Cola Pietro Campelli). (with works by Cola di Pietro, Venanzo da Camerino, Simone De Magistris), the Historical Museum of the Territory (which reconstructs the economic and social history of the place, with in-depth studies dedicated to domestic weaving and the production of handmade bricks, and a section dedicated to the history of the Varnelli Distillery, an internationally renowned company that was founded in Pievebovigliana in 1868), the Gino Maretta Collection (one of the greatest representatives of contemporary Italian art), the exhibition space dedicated to the composer Filippo Marchetti and the collection of woodcuts by Maria Ciccottì.
