Originally planned as a military supply route following the War of 1812, the Rideau Canal is not only an incredible feat of engineering, it’s also the oldest continuously operated canal in North America. Built by thousands of Irish immigrants, French Canadians and Scottish stonemasons and labourers, it opened in 1832 and is the only canal from this era that still operates along its original route. People today come from far and wide to visit this UNESCO World Heritage Site and experience its completely unique blend of nature, history and outdoor fun. The Rideau Canal National Historic Site is a 202km water route that connects Canada’s vibrant national capital in Ottawa, with Kingston and Lake Ontario to the south. Travel the canal by boat, canoe or kayak and experience the historic lock system operated by Parks Canada. You can also drive or cycle to many of the great destinations along its length.
