Santa Maria della Spina baznīca sākotnēji tika saukta par Santa Maria Del Ponte Nuovo, jo tā tika uzcelta uz Arno Krasta tilta augstumā – iznīcināta pilsētas centrā.

Baznīca savu vārdu ir parādā tam, ka tā savulaik apsargāja vienu no Kristus vainaga ērkšķiem, kas šobrīd atrodas Santa Chiara baznīcā (Via Roma, netālu no Piazza dei Miracoli).
Gotiskā fasāde ar daudzām smailēm centrā ir sadalīta ar stabu, kas starp diviem eņģeļiem tur Madonnu un bērnu.
Interjerā ir viena klase, ar sienām, kas sadalītas ar divu toņu joslām, kas raksturīgas Pisan Romānikai. Baznīca saglabā telti, kurā atradās ērkšķu relikts, un Andrea un Nino Pisano Madonna del Latte kopiju (oriģināls ir apskatāms San Matteo Nacionālajā muzejā Medicean Lungarno).
Sakarā ar postījumiem, ko izraisīja biežie Arno plūdi, 1871.gadā baznīca tika demontēta un pārbūvēta par vienu metru augstāk nekā sākotnējā stāvoklī.
