About Sekumpul: Seven Waterfalls Up to 80m in Bali Jungle

Sekumpul: Seven Waterfalls Up to 80m in Bali Jungle - Kota Singaraja | Secret World Trip Planner

The noise comes before everything else. A few hundred meters from the edge of the canyon, the roar of water plunging into the wooded gorge of Sekumpul overshadows every other sound of the forest — the birds, the wind through the banana leaves, one's own footsteps on the muddy path. We are in the Sawan district, in northern Bali, about 60 kilometers from Singaraja, and what awaits at the end of the path is a set of seven distinct waterfalls that plunge from heights of up to 80 meters into the same gorge covered with dense, humid tropical vegetation.

Sekumpul is often referred to by local tour operators as the most beautiful waterfall in Bali, and the plural is essential: it is not a single waterfall, but a group of closely situated waterfalls that visually merge into a compact white curtain during the rainy season, while in the dry season they separate into distinct strands, each with its own trajectory. The morning light, when it filters through the vegetation of the gorge, transforms the perpetual mist raised by the impact of the water into brief and intermittent rainbows, visible from below only for a few minutes at a time.

The path through the rice fields and the descent into the canyon

The trek to reach the waterfalls is an integral part of the experience. From the official meeting point — managed by a local cooperative that regulates access and provides mandatory guides — the trail first crosses typical terraced rice fields of the Balinese inland, with views of the northern hills of the island. This stretch is flat and relatively easy, lasting about 15-20 minutes on foot.

The challenging part begins when the trail descends towards the bottom of the gorge through irregular stone steps, often wet and slippery. The descent can take 20 to 30 minutes and involves a significant elevation change. The local guides — whose presence is required by the official site organization — are well aware of the trickiest spots and indicate where to hold on. Once at the bottom, the floor of the gorge is strewn with water-smoothed boulders, and the humidity is total: everything is covered by a veil of water vapor generated by the impact of the waterfalls on the rocky ground.

The visual and sensory impact of the waterfalls

Standing in front of the Sekumpul waterfalls is a physically immersive experience. The water falling from 80 meters generates a sound pressure that makes normal conversation difficult at close range. The mist is so dense nearby that within minutes, clothes become completely soaked, even without getting close to the water. The moss covering the walls of the gorge takes on intense shades of green that vary with the available light — darker in the shaded areas, almost fluorescent where a direct ray hits.

The seven waterfalls are not all visible from a single point. Some are only accessible by moving among the boulders of the stream bed, while others can be glimpsed laterally through the vegetation. The main waterfall — the tallest and most powerful — is the one that dominates the central view, with a water jet that can widen considerably during the rainy season compared to the dry season. The contrast between the white of the water, the black of the basalt rock, and the green of the vegetation is the visual detail that remains etched the longest.

Practical Information for the Visit

Access to the Sekumpul waterfalls is through an official entrance point in the Sawan district, where a contribution for the local guide is paid. The cost varies but generally hovers around a few hundred thousand Indonesian rupiah per group, a modest amount in absolute terms. It is important to go to the official place and not to unauthorized operators who sometimes offer their services along the road.

The best time to visit is early in the morning, preferably by 8:00-9:00 AM. This way, you avoid the crowds of organized groups arriving from the southern coast of Bali during the central hours of the day, and you take advantage of the softer and more favorable light for photography. It is advisable to wear trekking shoes with non-slip soles — sandals are inadequate for the descent — and to bring a change of clothes or at least a waterproof jacket, as the mist from the waterfalls soaks everything within a radius of dozens of meters. The rainy season, from November to March, makes the waterfalls more spectacular but the path more dangerous: during that time, the local guide becomes even more essential.

How to get from Singaraja and the coast

Sekumpul is located about 60 kilometers from Singaraja, the main city in the north of Bali, and about 2-2.5 hours drive from Ubud or the southern coast of the island. There is no direct public transport to the site: the most common way is to rent a scooter or a car with a driver from Singaraja or Lovina. The road leading to the Sawan district passes through hilly landscapes with clove and coffee plantations, and the journey itself is already worth the detour from the more frequented destinations in the south of the island.
