About Semien Mountains National Park Trails: Trekking Guide

At over 4,500 meters above sea level, the wind cuts through the air with surgical precision while the ground opens into vertical cliffs that drop for hundreds of meters. The Simien Mountains National Park, in northern Ethiopia, in the Amhara region, is one of those places where geology becomes theater: eroded basalt plateaus from millions of years of rain and wind have produced a landscape of spires, canyons, and escarpments that resembles nothing familiar. The park's administrative office is located in Debarq, the town that serves as the gateway and mandatory starting point for anyone wishing to venture onto the trails.

The park was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1978, among the first African sites to receive this recognition. The protected area covers about 412 square kilometers, although over the years the boundary has been the subject of discussions related to the expansion of local communities. From Debarq, the main route to the heart of the park follows a dirt road and then turns into a trail, gradually ascending towards the most frequented base camps, such as Sankaber, reachable in about three hours of walking from the access area.

The path from Sankaber to Chenek

The stretch between Sankaber and Chenek is considered the most representative segment of trekking in the Semien. The trail runs along the main escarpment, offering views of the Ethiopian plain that extends thousands of meters below. At certain points, the edge of the cliff is just a few steps from the trail, with no protections: constant attention is necessary, especially in strong winds. The elevation difference between the two base camps is moderate, but the altitude makes every ascent more tiring than expected.

Along this stretch, encountering Gelada is almost certain, endemic primates of Ethiopia that live exclusively in the country's highlands. The Gelada move in large groups, sometimes numbering in the hundreds, and graze indifferent to human presence. They are distinguished by the characteristic patch of red skin on their chest, more visible in adult males. Approaching slowly and without sudden movements allows for close observation without disturbing them.

The endemic fauna and what to expect to see

The Walia ibex (Capra walie) is the rarest and most sought-after species by visitors. This endemic ibex lives on the rocky walls of the escarpment and is more easily spotted in the morning hours when it descends to the edges to graze on vegetation. Population estimates vary, but it is said that only a few hundred individuals remain, making each sighting a significant moment. Chenek is the point in the park where the chances of seeing it are highest.

In addition to mammals, the park is home to the Ethiopian wolf (Canis simensis), one of the rarest canids in the world. Sightings are less frequent compared to the Gelada, but not rare for those walking the trails in the early morning hours. The avifauna is rich: the Rüppell's vulture and the alpine chough are constant presences along the escarpments.

Logistics and Practical Tips for Trekking

Access to the park is strictly regulated by the Debarq office, where it is necessary to register, pay the entrance fee, and hire an armed local guide, as required by park regulations. The cost of the permit and the guide varies, and it is advisable to check the updated rates directly at the office, as they change periodically. The best season for trekking is from October to March, when there is no rain and the trails are passable without difficulties related to mud. From June to August, the monsoon rains make many sections slippery and visibility is drastically reduced.

To reach Debarq, one generally departs from Gondar, a city accessible by domestic flights from the capital Addis Ababa. From Gondar, Debarq is about 100 kilometers north, reachable by local minibus or rented vehicle in about two to three hours. Bringing layered clothing is essential: nighttime temperatures often drop below freezing even in the dry months, while during the day the high-altitude sun burns intensely. Acclimatization is recommended: those arriving directly from Addis Ababa, already at 2,355 meters, should stop for at least one day in Gondar before ascending further.

The base camps and the pace of trekking

The main base camps — Sankaber, Geech, and Chenek — have essential facilities for overnight stays, with huts or tents. Do not expect high comfort: hot water is rarely available and electricity is limited or absent. Bringing a sleeping bag suitable for sub-zero temperatures is essential. A complete trek that touches all three base camps generally requires four or five days, with daily stages varying in length between 10 and 18 kilometers.

The pace of walking in the Semien is dictated more by altitude than by distance. Stopping often, drinking water regularly, and not forcing ascents are habits that make the difference between a pleasant experience and a difficult one. Local guides know the area well and often point out observation points off the marked paths, where the view of the cliff is particularly wide.
